Most pallets cover ~450 sq ft; confirm with your farm.

How it works

We multiply length by width and add your waste margin for edge cuts and curved borders. A standard roll covers 10 square feet, and most pallets cover about 450 square feet — sod farms vary between 400 and 500, so confirm before ordering.

Formula: Area = Length × Width × (1 + waste); Rolls = Area ÷ 10; Pallets = Area ÷ 450

Good for

  • New lawns with same-day results
  • Replacing dead or weed-choked turf
  • High-visibility front yards
  • Erosion control on gentle slopes

Tips

  • For irregular yards, split the area into rectangles and add them together.
  • Sod is perishable — schedule delivery for the morning you'll install it.
  • Water within 30 minutes of laying, then daily for the first two weeks.
  • Stagger seams like brickwork and butt edges tight; gaps dry out first.

Sod Calculator FAQ

How many square feet does a pallet of sod cover?

Most pallets cover about 450 sq ft, but farms range from 400 to 503 sq ft per pallet depending on roll or slab format. Always confirm the coverage before you order.

How much extra sod should I order?

Add about 5% for straight-edged lawns and up to 10–15% for curves, slopes, and lots of obstacles. Running short means a second delivery fee and possibly a different cut date that won't match.

Sod or seed — which should I choose?

Sod gives an instant lawn and works most of the growing season but costs several times more than seed. Seed is cheaper and offers more variety, but takes a full season to establish. Our grass seed calculator covers that path.
